UPDATE to i love it!--sticking with the old one--now i HATE IT.

11/19/16: just went in to use this and all it gives me is a blank grey screen! deleted it, redownloaded it, same thing : nothing. i hate you, paper! later: so i upgraded to a new ipad and it automatically downloaded the new paper, which is completely unuseable. just spent an hour poking all around in it and cant figure out how to do anything! ever heard of words? they help. even the supposed "support" page doesnt tell you much. i bought this new ipad to draw with, now ill have to do find a whole new drawing system to replace paper, and what am i going to do with my pencils? really, really angry. at least i hope my old ipad4 still has the original version of paperon it. and what the hell happened to the moleskine book? what is the point, if you cant get it out in the real world??? really, REALLY angry! 2015 update: glad i read comments before upgrading. i use paper to teach art. sure wont be downloading the new version! UPDATE: i came right back to update this. i cant believe with all the googling and emailing and whatnot that this was never mentioned anywhere, but i never found it! i went to the genius bar and in 30 seconds the guy TURNED MY IN APP PURCHASES SETTING ON!! who knew. ive never been able to buy an app before (nor wanted to, nor to have anything to do with apple for this very reason) and i have no idea why they would have such a setting and hide it, but thats the answer. i have my essentials and mixer now. and i love this app, especially with pencil. i wish there were a way to save my sketches right to the ipad rather than uploading them to facebook and then saving the image from there--or is there? im not betting on anything anymore! .:) while this, paired with pencil, looks so good i bought two, it will not really run without an inexpensive app ONLY available in app, butthe app store says "in app purchases not allowed." 53 support can only say contact apple support,

Not my choice

if I have to choose I do not choose this app. as soon as I launched it, I could not understand how it works. many things are not clear. I hope this problems will be fixed

I do NOT like grey colored screens

I have downloaded this to an Ipad3 & and my Ipad4 that are totally up to date... I am thrust into a grey screen (on both) upon startup... (NO escape)...NOT GOOD ! The $39 pencil to use with it gets tossed into the dust gathering pile it appears... yea, quite the ripoff, imho :(

Great

This so awesome!.....love the interface and ease of use.

Phenomenal!!!!!!!!!

This is great!!! Such a cool app. There are lots of tools, like a pen that makes your stylus feel like an Apple Pencil. I use this with my InkJoy 2 in 1 stylus.

Where did all of my work go?!!!

I have loved this app and use it for my business productivity but opened it this morning to find a "public" feature was added and all of my work is GONE

What about the artists now?

I used to be obsessed with this app, I was planning on asking for the pencil for Christmas. I know this probably wont help but I think it would be extremely beneficial to make two separate apps, one for the business aspect and one for the artists. This is and was such a quality app, and I believe that if they were separated more people would definitely join!

Below Average

Yet another "productivity" app. Ive used them all and this is about par. Doesnt do much that other apps dont already do better. Evernote is probably a better business app, especially given its scanning and tagging functions to go along with drawing. Other business drawing apps also have better support for handwriting recognition and text. Other apps also support more different types of brushes and some even support vector art. The spaces used to organize drawing is difficult to use-too easy to inadvertently close the space. 53 has added a bunch of features but they have cluttered the interface up rather than made this more useful. No syncing across apps is yet another deficiency. Deleted from my phone. Nuff said.

Meh

Without spending money on an app, you cant complain. I bought a 53 pencil and used it before the Apple Pencil was out. I still use the app now, just with an Apple Pencil(it puts the 53 pencil to shame.) My biggest complaint is that this app is not eligible for split view on my iPad Pro. The hope was that I could have this open while having an Ebook open as well. This would be nice to be able to reference the book Im using to learn to draw.

Blank screen after login on iPad Pro

I have a precious version iPad with the older version of Paper. LOVE it. Just bought an iPad Pro and after login get a white screen. No way out except to uninstall and try again...with the same results.

New version Ruins a great app

Paper was amazing when it was first released. A simple artist focused app that allowed you to easily create and draw on the ipad. For me personally the most recent update wiped out my old sketches and became annoying with it focus on productivity and sharing. Not everyone wants to create art for the purpose of social media and these intrusions took away from the experience. On top of this the sketch boos features became more convoluted. A great app brought down.

Great app but maybe some more tools?

please add a tool that fills in stuff like that bucket of paint thing and when you click on a circle and lets say you have the color pink and you tap on the inside of the circle and it turns pink but the outside the same, that tool. Also a spray tool would be nice! And super helpful when trying to make something look bright or aluminate. Other then that the app works fine ^_^

Huge backwards slide for the app

Before the big update this app was clean, smooth, elegant and easy to use. Now it is just a mess. Someone needs to be fired.

Please bring back the old version!!

This used to be my favorite app. I used it to draw everywhere, and strangers stopped me to ask what I was using. It was the only thing I really used my iPad for. I did freelance illustration work, all on Paper. Now its almost unusable for drawing . Erasing (which used to be fluid and intuitive) takes me so long it interrupts the flow of drawing. The paper is less sensitive and doesnt pick up what my stylus is doing. I miss the simplicity and sleekness of the journals. Every interaction with the app is frustrating. I agree with other reviewers; rather than trying to appeal vaguely to all audiences, split into different apps. Dont be a subpar productivity and drawing app. Be great at both functionalities, separately. Please, please, please bring back the old Paper 53 interface!

old app was better

this apphas completely lost its way with the new additions please bring old app as seperate app

Lost all work on update

Well it appears all my work was wiped with an update. Super disappointing.

Disappointed

Paper "was" amazing... simple, intuitive and artistic. It was Paper for Artists. The big update-Paper signs its death sentence: Top creators leave, people complain, overall app activity decreases. Whats so bad about this version of Paper you ask? Well, its laggy, crowded, unintuitive, complicated, and common. For Artists: The app is dead friend. Not what it used to be. My suggestion: Procreate For Note takers: seriously, theres numerous better notepads out there.

Used to be good

Old version focused on drawing and art was really cool. Apple Notes app is built in and has lists, so thats an unnecessary addition to 53. Also the view of pages is lame now; flipping through the virtual books was neat, now its just icons like every other document app. There are plenty of apps for office work (I use Notability) so changing 53 to cover some of that functionality just makes it more and more generic. I dont want to mix my sketches with my to do list for the office.

Good app that needs work

I love this app, the ink is very natural on the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. Some things Id love to see though; PORTRAIT MODE on iPad!!!!!!!! I dont understand why this hasnt been implemented yet! Also, Id love to see some more tools added like crayon, pastels and airbrush. Also more support for lists would be awesome. I really love the interface and the ease of use but it cant be a 5-star app without those changes. I hope youre listening because Id love to update this review!

Amazingly simple

Love the new iPhone version! Easy to use, great look and feel. Wish you could resize inserted photos to add Type next to or onto images. Beautiful UI and easy to use from beginners to pros. At first it doesnt seem like there are as many tools as some pro art apps, but pros still find a workaround and produce great work on here; as seen on the in-app tumblr section where you can view other artists shared work for inspiration.
